Caltex Diesel Crude Tanks project

Project: Caltex Diesel & Crude Tanks

Sydney, New South Wales, Australia

Shedden Uhde was engaged by Caltex to undertake the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) and Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) for two tanks at the Kurnell refinery in Sydney.

The scope of the projects was to provide a 500,000 bbl Crude Oil Storage Tank, 77.5 metres in diameter and 20.5 metres high, and a 110,000 bbl Diesel Oil Storage Tank, 39.6 metre in diameter and 14.6 metres high.

Special attention was given to specific environmental aspects of the project: the protection of an endangered native orchid species, the bunded areas will be fully lined with high density polyethylene (HDPE) to form a totally impervious barrier in the event of oil spillages, and storm water management was a critical design issue worked in conjunction with Caltex and the University of NSW.

The Crude Oil Storage Tank will be one of the largest oil tanks ever constructed in Australia and will provide crude oil storage to increase the operational flexibility of the refineryThe Diesel Tank will provide additional Diesel oil storage to allow the refinery to continue at full capacity through major shutdowns.
