The project involved a plant to convert magnesium ore (magnesite) to produce 50,000 tpa of magnesium metal using a flowsheet based on technology developed by Dow at the Freeport, Louisiana plant for extraction of magnesium from sea water. The process proposed for the SAMAG project involved ore preparation, HCl leach, brine purification, electrolytic magnesium production, recovery of chlorine and conversion to HCl)
